Direct-Firing Furnace Technology Wins Big at Fives’ Innovation Awards

A team that developed an innovative reheat furnace has taken home a special company honor for their work, reports process equipment manufacturer Fives.
In a statement, Fives said the Fives Stein team was awarded the Grand Prix at Fives Group’s annual Innovation Awards event in Paris, France, for their work on a new flameless direct-firing furnace (DFF) for continuous annealing or galvanizing lines.
The furnace enables production of third-generation, advanced-steels by providing homogeneous heating across the entire width of the strip at the furnace exit.
“This technological solution offers steelmakers many different advantages,” Camille Moukarzel, business development manager at Fives Stein, said. “Reduced operational costs, thanks to the 600°C pre-heated air flameless side burners; simplified control; minimized maintenance; and, more importantly, a dramatic reduction of NOx and CO2 emissions.”
Fives’ Innovation Awards, held this year on 24 September, is an annual event to support innovative ideas and solutions among Fives employees.
